Yet suffering is a reality. It's in every place we go. Weekly, if not daily, someone requests something from me (our church) because his/her family is struggling. It's the world we live in. So the last thing we want to do is read about it - especially 42 chapters! Nevertheless, I have discovered that it is in difficult Bible Reading that there is the most to be gained. The reward is in the details.
So what are the details in Job? Of course you'll have to dig yourself, but let me give you one . . . or two: seeking and finding. Life in the struggle is seeking and finding. You see, the difference between Job and his friends (who counsel him) is his passionate seeking of God in the deepest level of his soul. Job has pathos. He will not give up seeking the One who made him - who gave him life. And guess what? Job finds.
Does Job find an answer to his problems? Not really? Does Job find an answer to that age long question: Why is there suffering and evil? Of course not. Yet Job finds.
Job 42:5 I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear,
but now my eye sees you
Isn't that all we ever want or need? Seeing God?
